Why Is My Air Conditioner Running but Not Cooling the House?

An air conditioner can run without cooling properly because of restricted airflow, a dirty filter, thermostat settings, an outdoor-unit problem, refrigerant issues, frozen coils, drainage problems or equipment that cannot keep up with the home’s load.

Start with the simple checks

Confirm that the thermostat is set to COOL and the temperature setting is below the room temperature. Check the air filter and make sure supply registers are open and not blocked by furniture. Outside, verify that the condenser is not buried in leaves, cottonwood or debris.nnThese basic checks solve some comfort complaints, but they should not involve opening electrical panels or attempting refrigerant work.

Airflow problems can look like a refrigeration problem

A dirty filter, weak blower, blocked coil or undersized return-air path can reduce the amount of air moving across the indoor coil. The system may run for long periods while rooms remain warm. In some cases the indoor coil can freeze, making airflow even worse.nnIf you see ice on refrigerant tubing or the indoor coil, turn the cooling system off and schedule service rather than repeatedly resetting it.

When the outdoor unit needs diagnosis

A condenser fan that is not turning, unusual buzzing, repeated breaker trips or a compressor that will not start requires professional diagnosis. Refrigerant charge should also be checked only after airflow and other operating conditions are evaluated.nnThe goal is not simply to make the AC run. It is to identify why it cannot maintain temperature and whether the issue is repairable, maintenance-related or a sign that replacement planning should begin.
